Hartsville, S.C. - Coker Softball opened their 2009 season with a win and a loss, as they split their double-header with Catawba College, wining game one 2-0 and losing game two 5-2. After the win and the loss, each team is 1-1 on the year.
In game one, the Lady Cobras scored a run in the third inning and a run in the fifth inning and that would be all the offense needed as Shelly Catlett (Orangeburg, SC) (1-0) shut down the Indians in a complete game shutout on the mound. For Catawba, Kathryn Geouge was 2-for-4, while Allie Marshall and Carly Sabat were each 1-for-3.
In game two, Catawba jumped on the board early with two run sin the second inning, followed by a run in fourth, sixth and seventh inning for five runs, while they held Coker scoreless until the sixth inning, holding on for the 5-2 win.
Jamie Wells (1-0) threw a complete game for the Indians allowing two runs on four hits, while Sydney Greenwalt (Edwardsville, IL) (0-1) took the loss for Coker, allowing three runs on six hits.
The Indians were led at the plate by Callie Gordy, going 2-for-2 with two RBIs, while Allie Justice was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. MacKenzie White, Cassie Markham and Brittany Murray each had an RBI.
For the Lady Cobras, Klees again led the way going 2-for-4, while Shannon Mitchell (Virginia Beach, VA) and Becky Dillion (West Palm Beach, FL) were each 1-for-3.
