FLORENCE, S.C. – The Francis Marion University golf team will play host to the fourth-annual Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate Tournament, Monday and Tuesday (Feb. 23-24), on Hilton Head Island. The tournament will consist of 36 holes on Monday and 18 holes on Tuesday. Both days will begin with shotgun starts at 8:30 a.m.
The Wexford Plantation course measures 6,850 yards and is a par 72 layout.
This year’s field includes Francis Marion, Bowling Green State University, Cleveland State University, Davidson College, George Mason University, George Washington University, Marshall University, Ohio University, Presbyterian College, University of Rhode Island, University of Richmond, St. Joseph’s University, USC Upstate, USC Aiken, Wofford College, and defending tournament champion Elon University.
USCA won the 2006 event, while the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga captured the 2007 title. USCA enters this year’s tournament as the top-ranked team in NCAA Division II.
The event will begin a six-tournament spring schedule for FMU. The Patriots concluded their fall slate with a 48-23-1 record, including three Top-5 finishes in five tournaments.
Junior Christopher Couch paced Francis Marion during the fall season with a 73.29 stroke average, while senior Peter McGibney compiled a 73.50 average.
