Leaving Darlington

Hey everyone,
It's finally here! I am leaving in about twenty minutes to go to the airport in Charleston...okay maybe like ten. I have been working so long and so hard to get to this point and it's finally here! I will be in Europe three weeks and will try to blog as often as possible. I am visiting Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, the Netherlands, France and Great Britain. I am so excited and can't wait to share more!

2nd Amendment Preserved

The Supreme Court ruled 5-4 to uphold the individual's right to keep and bear arms for self-defense and hunting.

Link to ruling to come.

Sex Offenders Punishment

The Supreme Court of the United States ruled yesterday in a 5-4 decision that sex offenders could no longer be given the death penalty for child rape. Currently, only 2 men sit on death row for that crime and both in Louisiana. Read the ruling here.

The Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal has decided in lieu of execution, those convicted of "aggravated rape, forcible rape, second degree sexual battery, aggravated incest, molestation of a juvenile when the victim is under the age of 13, or an aggravated crime against nature," may be sentenced to castration. On a second offense, the court would be required to sentence castration in addition prison time. See the full story here.

Since South Carolina is one of the state's who prior to this ruling allowed the death penalty for child rape, what do you think? Should we adopt a law similar to Louisiana's castration law?

Do you agree with the Supreme Court's decision?

International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking

June 26th is the UN International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

“Yes, there is a lot to do to stem the tide of drug experimentation by youth,” says Clark Carr, President of Narconon International, headquartered in Los Angeles. “Daily we are confronted with new, sometimes bizarre statistics, such as described in the LA Times article, relating that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and other organizations are now drug screening municipal waste water and sewage systems to determine city-wide abuse of drugs – drug metabolites in the sewers!” London and Milan reported to show heroin use. Las Vegas, more methamphetamine. But Narconon staff and students, Carr says, know from talking with students face to face what drugs are being used right now, here. The kids always are in the know about the street and school scene.

In the U.S., in this last year Narconon reached 265,000 youth with drug education. In Southern California, Tony Bylsma, as an example, spearheaded delivery of 540 talks to 26,000 students in 173 schools. He knows from his students what “pharming” parties are – the new term for hanging out and downing assorted pharmaceuticals from parents’ medicine cabinets or pills scored on the net.

“However,” Bylsma says, “daily I do get good news, bright, thankful faces.” Narconon drug educators regularly survey their students. Bylsma showed a recent Los Angeles 7th-grader survey which cheerfully reports. “It was cool! Cause he wasn’t boring and we understood him … Before I thought drugs were cool, and I was so close to using them.”

Adults too need constantly to learn what’s what in the changing drug scene.

“The sun never sets on Narconon drug education,” says Carr. “We can’t afford to rest. Fortunately, we get more energy back from the kids than we ever give out. That’s the joy of doing this work.”

For more information on Narconon drug education or to ask for a presentation, please go to www.narconon.org and click on the Narconon center nearest you.

Become a Selective Service System Local Board Member

The Selective Service System wants to hear from men and women in the community who might be willing to serve as a Presidential appointee on a local draft board. A prospective Board Member must be a US citizen, at least 18 years old, registered with the Selective Service (if male), not be an employee in any law enforcement occupation, not be an active or retired member of the Armed Forces, and not have been convicted for any criminal offense. Once identified as qualified candidates for appointment, they are recommended by the Governor and appointed by the Director of Selective Service, on behalf of the President. Each new member receives 5 hours of initial training after appointment, followed by 2 hours of annual training each year for as long as they remain in the position. Board Members may serve up to a total of 20 years, if desired.

Local Board Members are uncompensated volunteers who play an important community role closely connected with our Nation’s defense. If a military draft becomes necessary, approximately 2,000 Local and Appeal Boards throughout America would decide which young men in each community receive deferments, postponements or exemptions from military service, based on federal guidelines.

If you believe you meet the standards of the Selective Service Board Membership and wish to be considered for appointment, you may submit an application on the internet at www.sss.gov or contact Selective Service Region Headquarters at (770)319-6036, extension 232, or write to the agency at SSS Region II, 2400 Lake Park Drive, Suite 270, Smyrna, GA 30080.

If anyone has been involved in a board such as the one described in the above Public Service Announcement or will be joining this one, please contact The News & Press by email editor@newsandpress.com or by telephone 843-393-3811. We would be interested in featuring your experiences in such a postition.

Advertise locally @ MovieTradition.org

I've written stories about Alex Loostrom (15) and Tyler Boyd (17) before, two remarkable high school students who created a website - MovieTradition.org - of their very own which features personal movie and restaurant reviews. Since February of this year, MovieTradition has grown leaps and bounds, going from about five visitors a day to 150-160 hits per day, to closing most nights with over 1,000 visitors, to now having 1,500 to 1,700 visitors a day! However, even though MovieTradition is powered by Google which places ads on their site, they are asking local businesses to advertise on MovieTradition in order to help the website grow even more. Tyler said it's a good idea for businesses to advertise on their website because "everybody likes movies." If you're interested in advertising, check out the contact page at MovieTradition.org.

Getting a Bath

Volunteers and board members of the Darlington County Humane Society held a fundraiser dog wash Saturday.

The next dog wash fundraiser is July 12, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Darlington Piggly Wiggly on Pearl Street. The tent is set up on the side of the building facing Edwards Avenue. Donate $10 and your dog gets a wash and organic flea dip, which smells wonderful and is available at the feed store in Hartsville on Railroad Avenue.

If you want to volunteer, go to their next meeting 2 p.m. June 22 at Swift Creek Fire Department. If you don't have time to spare, donations are always accepted. If you have pets, please spay or neuter them.

One more reason to eat local

This article is an excerpt from a book I would like to read.
Shopping for apples. At supermarkets in North America and Europe, the choice is restricted to half a dozen varieties: Fuji, Braeburn, Granny Smith, Golden Delicious and perhaps a couple of others. Why these? Because they're pretty: we like the polished and unblemished skin. Because their taste is one that's largely unobjectionable to the majority. But also because they can stand transportation over long distances. Their skin won't tear or blemish if they're knocked about in the miles from orchard to aisle. They take well to the waxing technologies and compounds that make this transportation possible and keep the apples pretty on the shelves. They are easy to harvest. They respond well to pesticides and industrial production. These are reasons why we won't find Calville Blanc, Black Oxford, Zabergau Reinette, Kandil Sinap or the ancient and venerable Rambo on the shelves.

Our choices are not entirely our own because, even in a supermarket, the menu is crafted not by our choices, nor by the seasons, nor where we find ourselves, nor by the full range of apples available, nor by the full spectrum of available nutrition and tastes, but by the power of food corporations.

Makes me want to hit the Pee Dee Farmers Market for some local food selections. The food will be fresh, fragrant and tasty, plus the money will stay in our economy to help our community.

How about you?

Drilling for misinformation

Rumors abound. Everyone is talking about oil. Gas prices. Drilling in Alaska.
Oil companies, foreign governments, regular citizens all put forth their ideas here on the Web. What's true and what's not is hard to distinguish.

On the (Internet) radio, I heard that Alaskan oil was being exported to Japan rather than being refined and used here to keep us "energy independent." A Google search revealed a range of answers to my skeptical mind. Some sites dismissed the entire idea that the oil was sent abroad while others noted that Pres. Clinton, after much prodding from oil companies, allowed oil exports to Asia.

We've all seen the ads that try to sell us the idea that oil companies are friendly, clean, happy people that just want to make our world a shiny, happy place. ... Based on my last trip to the filling station, that can't be entirely true. (A further explanation of a specific example can be found here too.)

How much can we believe our myriad sources of information when many are owned by a handful of corporate conglomerates?

This site Save The Internet says that
The nation's largest telephone and cable companies -- including AT&T, Verizon, Comcast and Time Warner -- want to be Internet gatekeepers, deciding which Web sites go fast or slow and which won't load at all.

Are we going to let this happen? Find your senators here and your representatives here.

The Supreme Court declared in 1945 that "the widest possible dissemination of information from diverse and antagonistic sources is essential to the welfare of the public, that a free press is a condition of a free society."

I agree.
I don't want big corporations censoring America. I want to hear every one's opinion. I want to be able to examine all these opinions, facts and sides of every issue and decide for myself. I want to critically think about issues because nearly all are not as black and white as they appear in 15-min. rotations on CNN, MSNBC or FoxNews.

What about you?
Post your ideas in the comments section.

From SC Fishing Report

Great Pee Dee
Fish the main river for catfish and target bass and panfish in the surrounding oxbow lakes.
Catfish: Good to very good. Catches of catfish are picking up in the main river using eels, large minnows, and goldfish. Fish on the bottom in holes and around channel breaks.
Crappie: Fair. Anglers fishing ox bow lakes off the main channel are starting to report improved catches. Use minnows.

Lynches River
Bream: Good. Anglers are doing well fishing worms, wax worms, and crickets on the bottom.
