Francis Marion University junior outfielder Martin Gordon scored South Africa's lone run in that country's 8-1 loss to Cuba in action at the 2009 World Baseball Classic this past weekend.
Gordon played centerfield and batted second in the first-round game played at Foro Sol Stadium in Mexico City. He went 0-for-4, but reached base in the ninth inning on a fielder's choice grounder to second base. He then moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single to center by Jonathan Phillips.
South Africa will face Mexico in an elimination game on Monday night at 10 p.m. (EST). The game will be carried on the Major League Baseball Network, ESPN Deportes, and MLB.TV
Prior to leaving Florence, Gordon was batting .273 in 11 games for the Patriots.
