FMU’s Ransom named to All-Region Team


FLORENCE, S.C. - Francis Marion University senior point guard Kevina Ransom has been named to the Daktronics All-Southeast Region Women’s Basketball Team.

Ransom was selected to the five-player second team.

Ransom, a native of Roanoke Rapids, N.C., is averaging 9.6 points and 3.3 rebounds per game. She leads the PBC and is second nationally in steals per game (4.5) and is second in the conference with 5.0 assists per game, despite playing only 22.3 minutes per contest. She also ranks second in assist-to-turnover ratio, is connecting on 46.8 percent of her field goal attempts (12th-best in the PBC) and 73.9 percent of her free throws (13th-best in the PBC).

In only two seasons at FMU, the 5-5 Ransom has climbed to third on the program’s all-time steals list with 276 and is 12th in career assists with 324.

Ransom and the Patriots will play in the opening round of the NCAA Division II National Tournament on Friday. FMU is the fourth seed and will face fifth-seeded USC Aiken (22-11) at 8 p.m. in Shuford Memorial Gymnasium on the campus of Lenoir-Rhyne College. The Southeast Regional semifinals are set for Saturday evening with the championship game on Monday night at 7 p.m.

Ransom has helped the Patriots to a 25-4 record and a No. 17 national ranking. Francis Marion captured its second consecutive Peach Belt Conference regular-season championship, and is making its second straight NCAA Tournament appearance.

Both Ransom and sophomore guard-forward Shannon Singleton-Bates were also named as finalists from Region 3 for the WBCA Division II State Farm Coaches’ All-America Team.

Ransom is a product of Northwest Halifax High School, and was an honorable mention All-American at Louisburg College before transferring to FMU.
