FMU softball goes 4-2 at Patriot Invitational

FLORENCE, SC – The fourth-ranked Francis Marion University softball team posted a 4-2 mark at this past weekend’s annual Patriot Invitational Tournament at Freedom Florence.

On Friday, FMU defeated St. Leo University 5-3 on a walk-off grand slam home run by senior Jessie Alesi, and beat Slippery Rock University 4-2 as freshman right-hander Lauren Bubeck (5-2) tossed a seven-hitter.

On Saturday, the Patriots beat local-rival Coker College 4-2 as junior southpaw Michael Wolf (10-3) tossed a two-hitter and drove in two runs, and then lost to Barton College 4-3 despite three hits and three RBIs from Wolf.

On Sunday, Francis Marion fell to St. Thomas University (Fla.) 5-4 in eight innings and then downed Newberry College 4-2 as leftfielder Jessica Birchmeier collected three hits and scored twice.

The Patriots are now 18-5, and will return to Peach Belt Conference action on Wednesday with a road doubleheader at UNC Pembroke. FMU’s next home game will be Saturday at 1 p.m. against Lenoir-Rhyne College.
